THE RISE AND FALL
came within the reach of all. Hitherto he had confined his efforts to borrowing ideas from the established art of others, whether silversmith, weaver of tapestry, painter, or etcher, and he had been most successful in imitating the wonderful imports from the East. But now his fancy turned more to things of domestic use. The potter's trade became popular—^gradually, of course. Several factories and many men continued to carry out the craft on the old-established lines. But prosperity produced competition, and even imitation. The monogram with which the artist signed his finished work became a trademark, and the name of the factory had to be added, or he delegated this to a foreman or licensed overseer, and a numeral was often added, probably denoting the number of the order.
Another cause of decline, owing to the double process of decorating and baking, was due to the fact that the skilled artisan was supplanted by a quite inferior workman, and new rules had to be made in the Guild of St. Luke in order, by means of fines, to rectify this evil.
